The Carat, the stick and the lemon…

The Carat, the stick and the lemon…

Motivation is a strange concept isn’t it?
Why would you be doing something you don’t want to do in the first place?

I guess most people will be thinking of their job at work, or household chores (like washing up) that just have to be done.

But on their own, none of these are large tasks which would take that much time or effort. The only furony comes when we put them off and put them off, and it all mounts up. Suddenly we need to hire a firm of contractors to solve the problem mountain that we have let fester.

I think there are two concepts behind this and they contradict each other!

Firstly that we don’t see the value in doing these minor tasks. They are a chore, a necessary but unwanted distraction, from something else.So the reason to be motivated to do them, stems from the same reason they exist. They form part of a bigger picture. Only if you appreciate that there is a bigger picture and what part this task plays in it, can we hope to become motivated about it.

So if waxing your legs means you may meat your soul mate, who just happens to a millionaire, a fantastic lover and the most caring and loving person you have ever met, waxing your legs and going ouch a bit, may be a fair trade…

So the bigger picture is needed to sustain enthusiasm (or even tolerance) for menial tasks.

It’s a similar situation for the checkout staff in the supermarket. You can think of it as YET ANOTHER pack of leg wax to scan through the till, for yet another annoying customer, or you can think of what that leg was may be bringing that person, and how even this simple transaction could be contributing immensely to their love life.

Plus the fact that once the checkout person doesn’t look fed up and as if they are an axe murderer in their lunch time, then suddenly the annoying customer isn’t annoying any more and may suddenly smile, or chat or say thank you and not treat the checkout person like something they have just trodden in.

So motivation can work in several ways and have a global viral effect.

In the next part, we’ll look at the contradiction and what the lemon has to do with anything…

Just as many workers with clean desks can have drawers crammed with old paperwork and pens, it’s possible to have a clean computer desktop with poorly organized files under the hood. But like a clean physical desktop, a clean virtual desktop serves as viral motivation to eliminate clutter.”
